Skype Web SDK – WebRTC now in Microsoft Edge

Another blog post in the ongoing series about making Skype Web SDK work without plugins….

In the last instalment (October 2016), the only browser which could offer audio & video without a plugin was Edge, because it was using oRTC. At that time, Microsoft said that they would eventually be supporting WebRTC but gave no details on timescales.

Now, however, we have an update. The latest version of Edge includes support for the WebRTC 1.0 API. It also includes support for H.264/AVC and VP8 video codecs for RTC.

These features are enabled by default in Windows Insider Preview builds starting with last week’s release, 15019, and will be in stable releases beginning with the Windows 10 Creator’s Update.

This news was released in a blog post on the Microsoft Edge Developer site.

Hopefully, this was the milestone which the Skype Web SDK team were waiting for before adding WebRTC support into Skype Web SDK, and we will soon seen Skype Web SDK support WebRTC both with Edge and other browsers also.
