The Application Registration Portal (apps.dev.microsoft.com) is being deprecated – here’s what you need to do

The Application Registration Portal, found at apps.dev.microsoft.com used to be the place where you went to create application registration entries for things like Bot Framework bots, Calling API bots etc.

However, for a while now, the preferred place to do this has been within the Azure Portal, and features have gradually been moving across. Right now, you can’t use the Portal if you log in with a personal account:

Now we have a date when the Application Registration Portal will stop working for users that log in with a Azure AD account – December 15 2019. If you visit now using an Azure AD account, you’ll see plenty of warning messages, as shown below (plus 2 popups which I haven’t shown):

The only exception to this right now are Live SDK apps, because they’re not supported in the Azure Portal yet. This should change in the future though.

I think this move is a good thing. The Azure Portal has all of the same functionality for creating and managing apps, and it’s better understood by IT Admins. Having 2 ways to register apps has been confusing so I’m pleased that this portal is going away, although I’ll miss it, having used it from the very beginning and those first tentative days of the Bot Framework 🙂
