Transcript (AI-generated):

Hello and welcome to another weekly update! I hope you’re doing well.

Last week was Commsverse – fantastic conference, really good to see so many of you there. I gave a talk on declarative agents, which seemed to go down okay. Managed to catch other talks too and learned a lot – really valuable experience.

This week, lots of MCP-related updates. First up: remember we discussed Agent Mode in Visual Studio about a month ago? It’s now gone GA, which is unusually quick for Microsoft. Typically, their preview-to-GA timeline is much longer (just look at Graph Beta!).

With Agent Mode going GA, we’re seeing enhanced integration options, particularly being able to specify which MCP servers you want to use. You can now toggle between Ask Mode (traditional chatbot behavior) and Agent Mode (which feels more autonomous, almost like you become the copilot instead).

That brings me to some thoughts about MCPs. They’re great for personalization and customizing your generative AI experiences, allowing for dynamic selections of data and actions. But I do wonder…is this the future? Or are we heading into app-like complexity where users need to maintain and curate their MCP server lists? It might work for now, but longer-term a clearinghouse model might be better.

Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code now support these integrations. GitHub Copilot also includes agent support with a catalog of MCP servers available including ones for GitHub, Figma, Microsoft Docs, Notion, Jira, Asana and even Azure DevOps.

You can check out the list at code.visualstudio.com/mcp.

Shoutout to Waldek for releasing updates to Dev Proxy that now support mocking Microsoft Graph API calls. This is a big win for enterprise environments and testing scenarios where you need predictable and fast responses. Very helpful for both test coverage and live demos.

Lastly, a quick highlight of something new (at least to me): the Microsoft 365 Developer Update blog series. June’s post is out now and it’s a solid round-up of what’s happening in the developer ecosystem, and it’s nice to see this become a regular series. If you’re looking to stay in the loop, check out those monthly updates as well as the Microsoft community calls. Great way to spot what’s new, who’s doing what, and start connecting with others in this space.

That’s it for this week. News might slow down a bit with summer, though Copilot has been keeping things lively the past couple of years – we’ll see what happens this time around.

Whatever you’re working on this week, have a fantastic one. Speak to you again soon!
