Microsoft Teams has better bandwidth handling than Skype for Business Online – making your network go further

It’s important to make sure that your network can support any new service, and that includes Microsoft Teams.

If you’re migrating from Skype for Business Online though, you have one less thing to worry about. That’s because Teams bandwidth improves on Skype for Business. For a typical call or meeting which includes audio, video and desktop sharing, Teams requires only 1.2 Mbps.

This is the minimal requirement. If more bandwidth is available then Teams will automatically scale up quality to match what’s available. Similarly, if Teams encounters low bandwidth it will readjust bandwidth usage to adapt to available bandwidth.

This new bandwidth requirement was recently published to Microsoft Docs, with an update to the Prepare your organization’s network for Microsoft Teams article.

1.2 Mbps is just the headline figure though. Accurately and confidently calculating bandwidth is complex. For exactly this reason, Microsoft have made available a Teams Bandwidth Calculator to assist admins in planning. You can access the Calculator at aka.ms/bwcalc

  1. In terms of scale it’s good to be aware that Skype Room System v2 devices can go up into the 10Mbps range as they can support up to 4 concurrent 720p video streams. (The normal Teams desktop clients do not do this.)
