Microsoft Teams Messaging Extensions now work in Outlook!

Microsoft Teams Messaging Extensions now work in Outlook!

At Build 2021, Microsoft announced a big change to Messaging Extensions for Microsoft Teams. Now, they’re going to work in Outlook too!

Messaging Extensions are those little widgets that show up when you’re composing a message, allowing you to quickly look up and add information, an image, or an Adaptive Card to your message.

Here’s a demo of what Messaging Extensions look like (as part of my 5 tips for Teams Integration video). The link should take you to the right spot: if not it’s at 20:29:

It makes complete sense that this same functionality would be really useful for people composing emails as well.

With this new functionality, users composing a message will be able to choose from a new menu of extensions in Outlook. It’s not clear (to me yet) whether Outlook will use the list of extensions already accessible to user via Teams, or whether extensions will need to be “installed” into Outlook. As soon as I know more, I’ll let you know!

Read more about the announcement.

This is a new announcement, and it’s likely that more information will be available over the coming days, so be sure to keep up to date with my Build 2021 coverage. I’m writing blog posts, recording videos, and posting on Twitter.
